10 Credit Repair Myths Debunked: What's Fact and What's Fiction

By Ian Walcott, Licensed Credit Specialist | Updated May 2026

  1. Myth: Credit repair is a scam. Fact: Credit repair is a legal service protected by the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA). The FCRA gives every consumer the right to dispute inaccurate information.
  2. Myth: You can just dispute everything and it all comes off. Fact: Accurate items can't be removed. Only inaccurate, unverifiable, or obsolete items can be successfully disputed.
  3. Myth: Credit repair companies can remove accurate late payments. Fact: No. If a late payment is accurate, it stays for 7 years. But many late payments are inaccurately reported — wrong dates, wrong amounts, or re-aged improperly.
  4. Myth: Checking your credit score hurts it. Fact: Checking your own credit (soft inquiry) doesn't affect your score. Only hard inquiries from lenders affect scoring.
  5. Myth: You need to pay for credit monitoring to repair your credit. Fact: You can get free annual reports from annualcreditreport.com. Many services also offer free monitoring.
  6. Myth: AI credit repair apps are just as good as human experts. Fact: AI apps are fast at scanning reports but can't negotiate with creditors, spot legal violations, or provide accountability when something goes wrong. That's why Untapped FS uses BOTH.
  7. Myth: Paying off a collection removes it from your report. Fact: Paying a collection doesn't remove it — it just updates the status to "paid." You need to dispute it for removal.
  8. Myth: Bankruptcy ruins your credit forever. Fact: Chapter 7 bankruptcy stays 10 years. Most people start rebuilding within 2-3 years and can qualify for a mortgage within 4-5 years.
  9. Myth: Closing old credit cards helps your score. Fact: Closing accounts reduces your available credit and can increase your utilization ratio, which hurts your score.
  10. Myth: Credit repair is instant. Fact: FCRA gives bureaus 30 days to investigate. Real results take 60-90 days. Any company promising faster is misleading you.
